Research Project: The Role of Micronutrients as Regulators of Performance Traits in Rainbow Trout

Location: Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture Research

Project Number: 8082-31000-013-012-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2023
End Date: Mar 31, 2028

Objective:
The nutritional balance of aquafeeds is one of the main determinants of how well fish perform in their production environment. Nutritional balance refers to both macronutrient content, such as protein to fat ratio, and micronutient content, such as vitamins, amino acids, choline, and fatty acids. The micronutrients themselves regulate specific metabolic, physiological, and molecular mechanisms that affect growth rates, overall health, and how well fish can respond to changes in environmental stimuli. The objective is for the ARS PI and the Cooperator to collaborate on research of mutual interest to characterize the how micronutrients regulate aspects of fish performance.

Approach:
The ARS PI and Cooperator will contribute their unique and non-overlapping expertise in 1) the analysis and characterization of mechanisms regulating fish performance and 2) customization of micronutrient contents of fish aquafeeds, to advance knowledge of how commercial feeds can be developed to optimize production efficiency in fish.
