Research Project: Characterization of Davis National Plant Germplasm System Vitis collection for Desired Breeding Traits - Davis, California

Location: Nat'l Clonal Germplasm Rep - Tree Fruit & Nut Crops & Grapes

Project Number: 2032-30100-001-003-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
The National Clonal Germplasm Repository at Davis, CA maintains plant material of over 4000 unique accessions of grape (Vitis) and makes this material available to breeders and researchers. To improve the utilization of this collection, we propose to collect plant material from the entire collection for DNA extraction and genotyping by project partners at USDA-ARS Geneva. The resulting data will be used to identify accessions with desirable alleles for breeding. Further, we will assist with sample collection for comparative metabolome analysis in fruit juice by additional project partners at USDA-ARS Geneva.

Approach:
Leaf tissue sampling from vines in early summer, to be provided to research partners at USDA-ARS Geneva for genotyping and allele mining using RhAmpSeq technology. Assistance with fruit juice sampling from Davis collection for comparative metabolome analysis by research partners at USDA-ARS Geneva. Resulting characterization data management in GRIN-Global database.
