Research Project: Population Genetics of Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) in Florida: Parsing Native from Invasive Genotypes

Location: Invasive Plant Research Laboratory

Project Number: 6032-22000-013-145-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2024
End Date: Jun 30, 2025

Objective:
Objective is to determine whether individual Florida waterways contain only a single Pistia genotype or multiple genotypes and, if the latter, whether these genotypes hybridize. This information will assist natural resource managers with decisions about where to apply herbicides and will inform our efforts at interpreting biological control outcomes.

Approach:
Will collaborate with cooperator to collect 20 samples from each of 20 waterways in Florida. Using chloroplast DNA and ddRAD sequencing techniques we will characterize each waterway as containing one or multiple Pistia genotypes. We will also determine whether the various genotypes hybridize with each other.
