Research Project: High Resolution Mass Spectral Database for Herbs and Foods

Location: Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory

Project Number: 8040-10700-003-006-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 30, 2023
End Date: Aug 29, 2025

Objective:
Identification of secondary metabolites in plant materials will augment information on vitamins and minerals and is necessary to understand subtle relationships ot human health. This project will develop and maintain a database for raw botanical materials and commercial botanical supplements obtained using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution accurate mass tandem mass spectrometry.

Approach:
The cooperator will assemble skilled programmers to construct a framework for organizing data for botanical materials and commercial botanical supplements based on data obtained by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution accurate mass/tandem mass spectrometry. The cooperator will develop a program that will allow users to obtain compositional data for botanicals identified by scientific or common names The program will provide chromatograms and mass tables for each botanical. The program will also allow users to search for botanicals containing components by name, mass, or chemical formula. Botanical identification will be possible by searching on multiple components.
