Research Project: Diagnostic Testing for Resilient Livestock

Location: Animal Disease Research

Project Number: 2090-32000-043-007-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2024
End Date: Sep 14, 2026

Objective:
The overall objective of this agreement is to determine herd incidence and prevalence of Anaplasma marginale from field samples and determine if disease severity is affected by co-infection with bovine leukosis virus or micromineral deficiencies.

Approach:
Samples will be recieved by ADRU and submitted to WADDL. To identify the animals infected with bovine anaplasmosis, WADDL will do competitive ELISAs on all serum samples. Those that are positive will be tested for Anaplasma marginale using real-time PCR. All samples will also be tested for bovine leukosis virus using serology and micromineral levels will be evaluated. Through time, A. marginale negative animals will be tested with PCR to determine incidence of infection.
