Research Project: Cryopreservation of Shrimp Spermatophore

Location: Agricultural Genetic Resources Preservation Research

Project Number: 3012-31000-007-017-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 2, 2023
End Date: Aug 1, 2026

Objective:
The Objective of this project is to harvest shrimp spermatophores from a commercial breeding company and develop approaches to cryopreserve this tissue type.

Approach:
Cooperator will conduct research at work sites in Florida, California, and Louisiana which will provide a broad range of experience for collecting and processing shrimp spermatophores. Various cryopreservation protocols, including: cryoprotectants, freezing rates, storage vessel, and approaches to attaching the thawed spermatophores to female shrimp will be evaluated for efficacy and functionality.
