Research Project: Improved Monitoring of Walnut Husk Fly through a New Pheromone Lure

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality Research

Project Number: 2034-43000-043-057-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2023
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
To improve monitoring of walnut husk fly (WHF) particularly early in the season with a male produced pheromone (delta-hexalactone and delta-heptalactone) lure.

Approach:
Utilize a cooperative effort between USDA-ARS, University of California, California industry, and foreign counterparts to address production losses attributable to the walnut husk fly. Particular attention will be paid to the development of a lure for trapping systems so that economic thresholds of husk fly damage can be quantified. Specific objectives include 1) formulating polymeric plugs with 100 mg, 200 mg, 300 mg and 400 mg of delta-hexalactone and 100 mg, 200 mg, 300 mg and 400 mg of delta-heptalactone. Field trapping studies with the polymeric plugs containing the different lactone concentrations and types of lactone will be replicated 3 times.
