Research Project: Cultivar Development: Accelerating Cultivar Release for Several Dry Bean Market Classes Using Genomic Selection

Location: Sugarbeet and Bean Research

Project Number: 5050-21430-012-007-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2023
End Date: Apr 30, 2027

Objective:
1. Implement genomic-assisted breeding tools to jointly predict top yielding and canning quality breeding lines in two dry bean market classes. 2. Test, predict, and identify one competitive dry bean cultivar from both dry bean market classes across years and locations. 3. Release and deliver cultivar performance results and characteristics and promote the benefits of new released cultivars to stakeholders and clientele.

Approach:
Genomic prediction for seed yield and canning quality will be implemented in MSU navy and black bean breeding germplasm for cultivar improvement. Advanced breeding lines will be shared with canning companies for selection of potential variety releases.
