Objective:
The overall objective of this research is to integrate information on land-atmosphere fluxes, soil and vegetation properties, and remote sensing products to quantify the evapotranspiration, carbon dynamics, and ecophysiology of specialty crops in order to increase the efficiency and productivity of irrigated agriculture in California.

Approach:
Quantifying the physiology and land-atmosphere exchange of water, carbon, and energy is necessary to understand and predict crop irrigation requirements and as well as the climate adaptation and mitigation potential of specialty crop systems. This work will link land-atmosphere fluxes of carbon, water, and energy with measurements of soil properties, leaf-level gas exchange, and proximal remote sensing techniques to advance our understanding of water and carbon dynamics of irrigated cropping systems. The results of this work will provide quantitative guidance to improve the irrigation efficiency, carbon sequestration capacity, and stress tolerance of specialty cropping systems.
