Research Project: Characterizing the Major Histocompatibility Complexes of U.S. Based Domestic Goats

Location: Animal Disease Research

Project Number: 2090-32000-046-006-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2023
End Date: Jun 30, 2025

Objective:
Cooperator is looking for research to promote vaccine development in small ruminant species.

Approach:
Researchers will characterize the major histocompatibility complexes (MHCs) of alternate goat breeds represented within the United States. A cooperator with goat producer connections will be established so that blood can be collected from registered goats. Sampled blood will either be shipped back as whole blood or have peripheral mononuclear cells (PMCs) isolated. Whole blood will undergo long-read methodology to sequence genomic regions responsible for MHCs. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) will be isolated and converted into cDNA from isolated PMCs to characterize which MHC genes/alleles are being actively expressed.
