Research Project: Land Health Assessment and Visualization Tools

Location: Range Management Research

Project Number: 3050-21600-001-108-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2023
End Date: Jul 30, 2025

Objective:
The broad program objective is to produce visualization and data exploration tools for standard rangeland monitoring datasets and the rangeland Soil Vulnerability Index for wind erosion (rSVI-wind). The tools will contribute to objectives of partner agencies, including the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), who use monitoring data and erosion prediction tools to inform range management. The research will develop an online (web-based) spatial exploration tool for the rSVI-wind that is connected to the Landscape Data Commons data portal. The research will then develop a web interface for a monitoring data summary and visualization tool that links to the Landscape Data Commons and information on conceptual models of ecosystem dynamics.

Approach:
1: Develop a web tool for visualizing and exploring the rangeland Soil Vulnerability Index for wind erosion (rSVI-wind) that is linked to the Landscape Data Commons and has a transferable code base (enabling future maintenance and development by USDA). 2: Develop a web tool for visualizing and exploring rangeland monitoring datasets, model outputs and benchmarks that is linked to the Landscape Data Commons and has a transferable code base (enabling future maintenance and development by USDA).
