Research Project: Evaluating Alfalfa Bred for Intercropping in a Corn Alfalfa Intercropping System

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-21500-002-033-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2023
End Date: Jul 31, 2026

Objective:
Alfalfa germplasm has been bred for improved performance intercropped with intermediate wheat grass. A second set of alfalfa germplasm has been bred for improved performance when intercropped with corn for silage. The objective of this project is to evaluate and compare the two germplasm groups when intercropped with corn for silage.

Approach:
Two sets of alfalfa germplasms will be used in this project. The first set of germplasms consist of alfalfa germplasm bred to establish better when intercropped with intermediate wheat grass. The second set of germplasms consists of alfalfa germplasm bred to establish better when intercropped with corn. Both set of germplasm will be established intercropped with corn harvested for silage. For all traits evaluated the two sets of germplasm will be compared. Establishment and stand survival will be evaluated throughout the corn growing season. Alfalfa stand will be evaluated after corn silage harvest in the fall. And alfalfa winter survival and spring regrowth will be evaluated the following growing season.
