Research Project: Fuel Treatment Durability in Sagebrush Ecosystems in Current and Future Climates

Location: Great Basin Rangelands Research

Project Number: 2060-21500-001-017-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2023
End Date: Dec 31, 2026

Objective:
To examine the durability of fuel treatments through time, predict changes in vegetation, fuels, and fire behavior in future climates using modeling, and develop management prescriptions for retreatment intervals that maximize restoration and conservation of sagebrush ecosystems.

Approach:
We will use field plant community and fuel type, structure, and accumulation data from a broad-scale, 15-year fuel treatment experiment in conjunction with landscape change simulations and combustion experiments and fire behavior modeling to project fuel treatment durability in conifer-encroached sagebrush ecosystems in current and future climate scenarios.
