Research Project: Development of a Genomic Selection Model for Rhizoctonia Root and Crown Rot Resistance Across ARS Breeding Programs

Location: Sugarbeet and Bean Research

Project Number: 5050-21220-017-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2023
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
Evaluate 200 Sugarbeet lines from each ARS breeding program located at East Lansing, MI, Fort Collins, CO and Fargo, ND using common parental and publicly available lines for Rhizoctonia resistance. Line will be genotyped to create a “representative” genotype for that line.

Approach:
One leaf from 25 plants of each of the 600 lines evaluated will be collected for DNA extractions and pooled by line for whole genome sequencing (1-5x coverage). Reads will be trimmed and filtered for quality and aligned to the EL10.2 genome. SNPs will be called for each sugar beet line using the TASSEL pipeline.
