Research Project: Constructing Host-Pathogen Protein Interaction Datasets Between Fusarium and Maize

Location: Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research

Project Number: 5030-21000-072-015-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2024
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
Create experimentally determined datasets of host-pathogen protein-protein interactions (PPIs) between Fusarium and maize.

Approach:
The cooperator’s lab, which specializes in mass spectrometry-based proteomics, investigates the molecular interactions between plants and their environment. They will establish and implement a protocol to identify protein-protein interactions between maize and Fusarium using proximity-based labeling combined with mass spectrometry. This method will help us understand which proteins in Fusarium and maize interact with each other. The resulting dataset will provide valuable insights for scientists and breeders, aiding in the development of better strategies to protect crops from diseases and improve food safety. By understanding these interactions, we can mitigate the risks of Fusarium-related toxins in food supplies. The results will be shared with the maize research community through the MaizeGDB website.
