Research Project: Developing Intelligent Tools for High-throughput Crop Phenotyping

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-026-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2023
End Date: Aug 31, 2026

Objective:
1. Perform bioinformatics analyses, develop and implement newly developed software focused on improving breeding tools. 2. Utilize machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques on breeding program data. 3. Implement and make available automated pipelines for enabling breeders to utilize developed algorithms.

Approach:
Investigator and Cooperator will work together to enhance breeding tools and references for animal and crop systems to address the objective above: 1. Develop new algorithms for analyzing breeding program data. 2. Integrate machine learning and artificial intelligence into new algorithms. 3. Deploy apps to enable automated utility of developed algorithms. 4. Initiate and train ARS members in app usage. Participate in developing new strategies for collecting field data systematically. 5. Utilize and develop systems for integrating analyzed data into systematic collection systems, such as breedbase databases. 6. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals and databases.
