Research Project: Diversity of Foreign Phytophthora Infestans Genotypes

Location: Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research

Project Number: 8044-22000-052-014-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 21, 2024
End Date: Sep 20, 2026

Objective:
This project will determine the genetic diversity of Phytophthora infestans infecting tomato in Mexico to determine if the import of infected tomato from Mexico might serve as a source of introduction for foreign genotypes of this destructive plant pathogen.

Approach:
To better understand the diversity of Phytophthora infestans on tomato in Mexico, samples of diseased tomato plants will be collected by the Cooperator in commercial production areas with isolations carried out at a laboratory in the Life Sciences Division of the University of Guanajuato. Location, cultivar, and management practices will be collected for each sample, and resulting isolates will be shipped to ARS for DNA extraction and genotypic analysis.
