Research Project: Groundwater and Soil Water Dynamics Modeling to Advance Erosion Prediction in Agricultural Fields

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research

Project Number: 6060-13000-029-037-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 21, 2023
End Date: Aug 30, 2024

Objective:
Conduct three-dimensional modeling of groundwater and soil water dynamics to support erosion and water resource analyses.

Approach:
a) Conduct modeling studies with CCHE3D-GW to determine spatial and seasonal changes in soil water content in agricultural fields. b) Evaluate CCHE3D-GW model performance when identifying the location and duration of water saturated areas in cropland. c) Evaluate methodologies for determination of soil hydraulic properties using soil databases and field measurements to advance USDA’s erosion prediction capability. d) Provide groundwater modeling support for studies on soil water content prediction. e) Develop computationally efficient methods to determine soil water content patterns in agricultural fields.
