Research Project: Conversion of Cotton Gin Trash To Liquid Fuels and Other Bioproducts Via Hydro-Pyrolysis and Other Thermochemical Processes

Location: Cotton Ginning Research

Project Number: 6066-41440-009-015-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2024
End Date: Mar 31, 2027

Objective:
1. Develop tools and methods to analyze the potential of cotton gin byproducts for liquid transportation fuels and other high-value chemicals using hydro-pyrolysis and other thermochemical processes. 2. Conduct the techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessments of the gin byproducts hydro-pyrolysis process and analyze the viability of the valorized products.

Approach:
Fresh and pretreated gin trash samples from multiple sources and with various compositions will be processed using existing hydro-pyrolysis technology and other thermochemical processes to convert the liquid fuels and other products. Relevant parameters to accurately model and predict the feasibility of the proposed technology will be developed. The developed models will be used with other tools to assess the techno-economics and life cycle environmental impacts of the proposed process.
