Research Project: Dry Bean Cultivar Development

Location: Sugarbeet and Bean Research

Project Number: 5050-21430-012-011-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 18, 2023
End Date: Mar 31, 2027

Objective:
1. Implement genomic-assisted breeding tools to jointly predict top yielding and canning quality breeding lines in two dry bean market classes. 2. Test, predict, and identify one competitive dry bean cultivar from both dry bean market classes across years and locations. 3. Release and deliver cultivar performance results and characteristics and promote the benefits of new released cultivars to stakeholders and clientele.

Approach:
Genomic prediction for seed yield and canning quality will be implemented in cooperator navy and black bean breeding germplasm for cultivar improvement. ARS will conduct canning quality and provide phenotypic data. For the genomic prediction, an in-situ training population or set composed of multiple independent preliminary yield trial (PYT)breeding nurseries of the cooperator dry bean breeding program grown in 2021-2023 will be used as the training set to train the enhanced genomic assisted prediction model in 2023. A total of N=~800 unique lines composed of the two market classes (black and navy) will be analyzed including parental lines most used for crosses within each market class. For the testing set, we will utilize a total of N=~120 unique lines from the black (60)and navy (60) Advanced Yield Trial (AYT) nurseries grown in 2022-2023 by cooperator near Frankenmuth, MI and a second location in Huron county, the largest dry bean producing county in MI and the U.S. to perform genomic selection.
