Research Project: Adsorption of PFAS by Biochars and Subsequent Regeneration with Microwave Treatment

Location: Water Management and Conservation Research

Project Number: 2020-13000-005-018-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 1, 2023
End Date: May 31, 2027

Objective:
1) Examine and compare the removal of per- and poly-fluorinated compounds (PFAS) by biochars and an activated carbon typically used in water treatment; and 2) Evaluate microwave irradiation for the destruction of PFAS compounds on biochars and activated carbon.

Approach:
The approach includes two tasks in the project: 1. Will involve determining the adsorption of selected short and long-chain PFAS compounds by four different biochars and one granular activated carbon (GAC); and 2. Will investigate optimum MW operating conditions on PFAS defluorination for biochars and the GAC loaded with selected PFAS.
