Research Project: Determining the Causes of Declining Test Weight of Soybean and Utilizing Breeding to Increase Test Weight (University of Minnesota)

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6070-21220-070-057-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2023
End Date: Sep 30, 2024

Objective:
Determine the relation of test weight to seed size, seed quality, protein and oil content, sucrose concentration, amino acid content and yield.

Approach:
Measure and analyze test weight data on samples collected from the Northern Uniform Soybean Tests (NUST) and Minnesota State Variety Tests. The impact will be reported on changes in test weight in relation to varying seed size, protein and oil content, sucrose and yield. A broad assessment of test weight is needed in soybean to fully understand why test weight is declining and what impacts increasing test weight will have on seed composition.
