Research Project: Minnesota Spatial Framework for tracking Agricultural Nutrient Budget

Location: Soil and Water Management Research

Project Number: 5062-12130-008-043-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 17, 2023
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
Design and implement a spatial framework for agricultural nutrient budget assessment and tracking in the state of Minnesota. Objective 1: Determine the method, assumptions and data sets that will be used to estimate fertilizer additions, manure nutrient additions, and crop nutrient needs and uptake. Objective 2: Develop the nutrient budget GIS spatial data layers and run modeling scenarios. Objective 3: Develop a nutrient budget tool to display results at different scales.

Approach:
Objective 1: Review existing approaches and assumptions from nutrient budget analysis work. Decide on the best approach to use for the nutrient budget framework. Decide on manure application modeling scenarios. Objective 2: Collect and assemble all needed data sets (according to results of Objective 1). Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to run modeling scenarios and summarize results. Calculate nutrient budget results at different scales. Objective 3: Determine best way to display nutrient budget/balance results. Develop a framework to display nutrient budget/balance results. Document future development needs.
