Objective:
Coordinate and participate in the Uniform Soybean Tests – Northern Region, including annual coordination meeting, collecting seeds from participants, designing experiments, distributing seeds to participants, planting and harvesting trials in Indiana, evaluating soybean lines performance before and after harvest, collecting data from participants, compiling and analyzing data, and producing an annual report.
Approach:
The Uniform Soybean Tests is a cooperative testing program that is the main mechanism for U.S. public soybean breeders to obtain multi-state field data to support the release of varieties and germplasm. Separate tests for each of maturity groups from 00 to VIII are grown in appropriate locations across 18 US states and two Canadian provinces. The lines are evaluated for yield, agronomic performance, disease resistance and quality traits. From 1943 to the present, the ARS location in Stoneville, MS, has coordinated the southern tests, analyzed data and published the results from the southern states in an annual report which is available as a hard copy and online. The northern tests started in 1936, and from 1974 to present, the ARS in West Lafayette, IN, has coordinated the northern tests, analyzed data and published the results from the northern region in an annual report which is available as a hard copy and online.
