Research Project: In Vivo Evaluation of Avirulent Live B. Bronchiseptica Vaccine to Reduce PRDC Severity

Location: Virus and Prion Research

Project Number: 5030-32000-237-019-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 1, 2024
End Date: Jan 31, 2025

Objective:
In vivo assessment of an avirulent live Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccine for ability to reduce disease and/or macroscopic/microscopic lesions associated with porcine respiratory disease complex, specifically disease/lesions following B. bronciseptica coinfection with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) or influenza A virus (IAV).

Approach:
The Cooperator will provide the vaccine. ARS will obtain sows to farrow at the NADC. Some sows will be given B. bronchiseptica to allow for natural transmission to piglets. Piglets will divided by litter and whole litters will be vaccinated or left unvaccinated with B. bronchiseptica vaccine. At weaning, piglets will be exposed to PRRSV or IAV or remain unexposed. B. bronchiseptica colonization, viral shedding, and lung pathology will be evaluated to assess vaccine efficacy.
