Research Project: Preparation and Presentation of Indigenous Foods

Location: Healthy Body Weight Research

Project Number: 3062-51000-057-019-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 4, 2024
End Date: Mar 2, 2026

Objective:
This project will benefit the people of the United States by continuing to build the evidence base about Indigenous foods and their impact on nutrition and health, especially among Indigenous populations. Both parties in this collaboration- the USDA-ARS (Agriculture Research Service)-Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center (GFHNRC) and Cooperator- bring strong scientific and technical expertise. Our combined efforts will allow us to develop a protocol for a human clinical intervention trial that begins to address knowledge gaps critical to understanding and addressing nutrition-related diseases that disproportionately impact Native Americans. This partnership also advances the mission of the USDA-ARS-GFHNRC to conduct research that explores the role of Indigenous foods in improving human health.

Approach:
USDA-ARS-GFHNRC and Cooperator will work collaboratively to (1) finalize development of the healthy Indigenous diet and (2) conduct an intervention study where the diet will be fed to Indigenous adult participants who have enrolled in a USDA-ARS-GFHNRC research study.
