Research Project: Advancing Phenotyping Methods in Plant Breeding Programs

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-038-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2024
End Date: Aug 31, 2028

Objective:
1. Develop, investigate logistical integration and implementation of advanced phenotyping methods into breeding programs utilizing bioinformatics software. 2. Organize breeding community projects around development of advanced phenotyping platforms that are commodity independent and work across a large range of species, including peanuts. 3. Simultaneously work on developing database and hardward structures that will integrate with genomics data from collaborating projects.

Approach:
Investigator and Cooperator will work together to enhance breeding phenotyping tools by: 1. Organize commodity groups to initiate development of ontology systems. 2. Advise on development of next-generation phenotyping tools including investigation of various hardware systems. 3. Initiate and train collaborators in data management strategies for collecting field data systematically. 4. Utilize and develop systems for integrating historical breeding data into systematic collection systems, such as breedbase databases. 5. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals and databases.
