Research Project: Estimate Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Drill Seeded Rice with Soil Amendments using DNDC Model

Location: Delta Water Management Research

Project Number: 6024-13000-004-077-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 1, 2023
End Date: Oct 31, 2026

Objective:
1. Validate DNDC model for greenhouse gas (GHG) emission estimates in drill seeded rice with soil amendments using GHG datasets from field measurements. 2. Modify DNDC model to fit greenhouse gas emission from flooded rice fields with soil amendments. 3. Evaluate the efficacy of soil amendments using predicted GHG emissions from drill seeded rice system.

Approach:
Carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane emissions will be measured from drill seeded rice fields with and without soil amendments using the vented flux chamber and gas chromatography method. Soil amendments will be implemented based on recommended rates and application for flooded rice. The existing DNDC model for flooded rice will be used to model greenhouse gas emissions from flooded rice. The actual greenhouse gas emissions from field measurements will be used to fit model coefficients and parameters of DNDC model. Mitigating potential of soil amendments on GHG emissions will be assessed using both actual and estimates of GHG emissions.
