Research Project: Development and Evaluation of Peroxide Free Fin-Fish Nursery Feeds with Active DHA-Synthase Enzyme (DSe)

Location: National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center

Project Number: 8030-31000-005-059-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2024
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
Perform a digestibility study to test the feasibility of a single cell lipid source for salmon feeds. New lipid sources are needed to fulfill the future demand for salmon feeds.

Approach:
The goal of the feed is to increase the amount of long chain omega-3 fatty acids (specifically Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)). These two fatty acids have been shown to have a positive effect on human health and are desired by consumers purchasing salmon fillets. A novel single cell lipid ingredient will be tested in feed for Atlantic salmon. A feeding trial will be conducted at the facility and growth performance, crude fat and fatty acid profiles will be measured.
