Research Project: Screening Elite Peanut Breeding Lines for Resistance to Peanut Smut

Location: Peanut and Small Grains Research Unit

Project Number: 3070-21220-009-015-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 10, 2024
End Date: Mar 19, 2025

Objective:
1. Utilize marker-assisted selection to select for breeding lines containing smut resistance gene. 2. Validate smut resistance for selected breeding lines (in Argentina). 3. Develop and release smut resistant peanut cultivars for commercial production in Argentina and the U.S.

Approach:
Our team will introgress smut resistance from identified resistant PI accessions into cultivated background for all peanut genotypes. An aggressive bioinformatics based protocol will be used to select breeding material with the smut resistance trait as well as other desired traits and recurrent parent background. Selected breeding lines will be tested for smut resistance in Argentina and agronomic performance will be determined. Breeding lines with elite performance and smut resistance will be developed for cultivar release in the U.S. and in Argentina.
