Research Project: Tall Tower Monitoring - Midwest Area, St. Paul

Location: Soil and Water Management Research

Project Number: 5062-11120-001-029-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2024
End Date: Feb 20, 2029

Objective:
Provide high accuracy, continuous measurement of the major agricultural greenhouse gases (N2O, CH4, and CO2) at key points in major US agricultural regions to: 1. provide atmospheric data to improve ground-based models of emissions 2. identify previously unknown "hot spots" of high emission 3. provide data for the National GHG Inventory and for tracking progress in reducing emissions from agriculture

Approach:
Equip a network of 6 radio towers at select locations with gas analyzers to measure the concentration of greenhouse gases in air pulled from the 100 m height. Each site will have a set of standard gases to allow frequent calibration for highest accuracy. The concentration data that are collected will be used with atmospheric transport models in an inverse mode to estimate emissions from crops and land uses within the primary footprint of the tower, and compare those emissions with ground-based models.
