Research Project: Digital Imaging of Specimen Information for US National Fungus Collection

Location: Mycology and Nematology Genetic Diversity and Biology Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-327-008-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2024
End Date: Sep 30, 2025

Objective:
The objective of this agreement is to provide digital images of specimen labels housed in the US National Fungus Collections. This will negate the need to physically handle and loan specimens in cases where only information is needed and not the actual specimen. This will make valuable information annotated on the labels by previous researchers available to the Cooperator and general public.

Approach:
ARS will contract to digitize specimen labels for specimen packets housed in the U.S. National Fungus Collections for use as reference for identifying fungal specimens collected from domestic sources, and international surveys. In addition, ARS will increase the number of records available in the database of fungi on plants around the world and provide accurate scientific names of plant-quarantine significant fungi. Images will be made available through MycoPortal and other websites identified by the Cooperator.
