Research Project: Development of Barley Germplasm with Multiple Disease Resistance

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-025-027-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2024
End Date: Jun 30, 2025

Objective:
Develop agronomically advanced malting barley cultivars with multiple disease resistance.

Approach:
The objective will be accomplished by: 1) evaluation of breeding germplasm for resistance to stem rust, leaf rust, net blotch, spot blotch, bacterial leaf streak and other diseases; 2) identification of new resistance sources to these diseases in diverse germplasm panels; 3) development of mapping populations derived from the new resistance sources; 4) elucidating the number, chromosomal position, and effects of loci conferring adult plant resistance in these sources; 5) haplotyping resistance loci and developing molecular markers for their selection in breeding programs; and 6) releasing new barley germplasm with enhanced resistance to multiple diseases.
