Location: Horticultural Crops Disease and Pest Management Research Unit
Project Number: 2072-22000-045-041-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement
Start Date: May 1, 2024
End Date: Sep 30, 2025
Objective:
Objective 1.1: Maintain & test G1 foundation & advance breeder selections
Objective 1.2: Distribute G1 foundation plants and advance breeder selections as well as imported material under CIP
Objective 1.3: Maintain CIP genotypes for diagnostic testing and release
Objective 1.4: Apply therapies to eliminate target pathogens from infected genotypes
Objective 1.5: Provide diagnostics to berry stakeholders
Objective 2.1: Maintain large virus positive collection for diagnostics and research
Objective 2.2: Identify complementary sources of funding to support and/or enhance clean plant programs
Objective 2.3: Develop Succession plan resources to address people, plants, and infrastructure
Approach:
Maintenance of clean materials: The North Carolina center will maintain each of the 160 accessions that currently houses in tissue culture. About 100 of these accessions are currently maintained in the screenhouse/mother house as G1 foundation material. Screenhouse and mother house are maintained pest/disease free through regular scouting and chemical sprays as needed.
Testing G1 foundation: Retesting of clean stock is a designated activity that occurs every 2-3 years depending on the crop. Also, test for all the viruses that have been recently discovered by PCR protocols described in peer-reviewed publications.
