Research Project: Optimizing Photosynthesis and Nitrogen Relationships for Future Climates: Improving Predictive Accuracy of Gene Regulatory Networks...

Location: Global Change and Photosynthesis Research

Project Number: 5012-21000-032-027-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2024
End Date: Jun 30, 2026

Objective:
The objective of this proposal is to develop approaches that will increase the predictive accuracy of gene regulatory networks that coordinate photosynthesis and nitrogen use in the common bean.

Approach:
ARS researchers will grow common bean at four nitrogen doses and at ambient and elevated CO2. Physiological traits (photosynthesis, nitrogen content, biomass), gene expression and chromatin accessibility will be measured. Tissue will also be sent to our Cooperator who will prepare samples to measure four histone modifications. ARS scientists, with the Cooperator, will develop and implement a machine learning network inference approach that integrates transcriptome and epigenetic data. ARS researchers will develop a transient assay in common bean to test predictions from the inferred networks.
