Research Project: Development of New Field Phenotyping Technologies for Genetic Mapping and Breeding in Cranberry

Location: Vegetable Crops Research

Project Number: 5090-21220-007-035-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2024
End Date: Aug 31, 2028

Objective:
Develop new field phenotyping technology to aid in the development of new cranberry cultivars. Phenotype cranberry breeding and mapping populations. Use the phenotypic data for genetic mapping and breeding of commercially important traits.

Approach:
We will develop a phenotyping vision tool to be deployed in the field that will allow the collection of data on flowering, fruit development, yield, and fruit quality. We will implement this tool to phenotype a cranberry breeding and genetics collection belonging to the USDA and maintained at the Wisconsin Cranberry Research Station. The data will be used for genetic mapping to allow the understanding of the genetic control of important cranberry traits and the creation of efficient breeding strategies for the release of improved cranberry cultivars
