Research Project: Carbon and Water Exchanges and Plant Phenology on Great Basin Rangelands

Location: Great Basin Rangelands Research

Project Number: 2060-21500-001-023-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Jul 30, 2028

Objective:
Objective 1: ARS and UNR will collaborate on the quantification of atmospheric carbon dioxide exchange (source or sink), total evapotranspiration (ET), plant phenology (green up and senescence) under different grazing regimes in Great Basin meadows. Objective 2: UNR will synthesize data sets of plant water use, soil moisture, snow depth, soil temperature and plant phenology from multiple locations to complete ecosystem level research on plant community dynamics. The ARS PI will provide datasets, lead manuscripts preparation, and advise on analytical techniques.

Approach:
UNR and ARS will install and maintain three eddy covariance towers and plant phenology cameras to determine the impacts of different grazing regimes in Great Basin rangelands. Additionally, data from existing meadow and watershed projects, including soil moisture, snow depth, soil temperature and plant phenology from multiple locations with coexisting records of weather will be synthesized. ARS and UNR anticipate a minimum of three peer-reviewed manuscripts from this agreement.
