Research Project: Control Strategies for Rhagoletis Mendax

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality Research

Project Number: 2034-43000-043-072-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 15, 2024
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
Improve Rhagoletis trapping capabilities by evaluating new trap designs and chemical attractants.

Approach:
Utilize a cooperative effort between USDA-ARS, USDA-APHIS, MSU, and industry to address the need to control Rhagoletis mendax in US blueberry exports. Elements of this activity will be conducted in phases: 1) the development of new traps and lures, the deployment of the traps, and the evaluation of capture efficiency relative to the state of the arts. The first aim will evaluate polymeric lures containing the male produced pheromones. The second aim will evaluate V-type trap capture with or without ammonium carbonate/acetate “food lures”. Monies were budgeted in the Source of Funds Agreement in 2023/24 to provide $15,000 to MSU.
