Location: Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory

Project Number: 8040-10700-003-010-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2024
End Date: Jun 30, 2027

Objective:
Analyze phenolic compounds and other secondary metabolites in African plant materials.

Approach:
Undergraduate students at Bowie State University will be trained in basic analytical chemistry and instrumental techniques to allow them to analyze samples that the PI will collect from Africa. Students will be taught basic skills, such a weighing out samples, pipetting, extraction techniques, and use of infrared spectrometry, near-infrared spectrometry, thin-layer chromatography, and mass spectrometry. They will be taught how to keep a laboratory notebook enter and calculate results, and how to present a summary of their work to colleagues.
