Research Project: Accelerating Breeding Cycles in Wheat

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 6070-22000-019-020-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Jul 31, 2029

Objective:
Objective 1 – Deploy wheat-maize hybridization for development of wheat double haploid plants. Objective 2 – Leverage populations to develop improved genomic breeding approaches. Objective 3 – Evaluate effects of gene mutations for haploid induction.

Approach:
Approach Obj 1: Improvements will be made to established protocols for production of doubled haploid plants. Cooperator will evaluated effects of different hormone treatments and lighting regimes on protocol efficiency. Speed breeding approaches will also be considered as an alternative to doubled haploid production. Approach Obj 2: Perform collaborative evaluation of resulting inbred lines for important agronomic traits (phenology, disease and insect resistance) in greenhouse and field nurseries. Data will contribute to gene mapping and model development. Approach Obj 3: Germplasm will be selected for mutations in genes determined to influence haploid production in other plant species, including maize, and evaluated for wheat haploid induction.
