Research Project: Advanced Technology for Rapid Comprehensive Analysis of the Chemical Components of Foods

Location: Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory

Project Number: 8040-10700-003-011-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2024
End Date: Jun 30, 2028

Objective:
Plant tissues consist of large numbers of complex molecules that are important to human health and can be used to identify their taxon and location of origin. Authentication is essential in the field of botanical dietary supplements where adulteration is a major problem. This project will develop compositional data for botanical materials that can be incorporated into a database for identification and authentication.

Approach:
This project will develop new and/or improved methods for obtaining compositional data for botanical materials and dietary supplements. The project will be accomplished through on-going efforts for the full 4-year project duration. Botanicals and supplements will be analyzed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution accurate mass/tandem mass spectrometry for incorporation into a botanical database. The agreement will continue to support the training of post-doctoral research associates in the fields of analytical chemistry, nutrition, and dietary supplements.
