Research Project: Collaborative Project to Improve Crown Rust Resistance in Oat

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-025-033-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 15, 2024
End Date: Jul 14, 2025

Objective:
Increase the efficiency of generating advanced breeding lines with improved crown rust resistance.

Approach:
1. Screen parents in the Buckthorn nursery for disease resistance and with a selected set of KASP markers that are diagnostic for known crown rust resistance genes/loci. 2. Screen segregating F2 populations with selected KASP markers to identify lines carrying multiple resistance alleles. 3. Conduct genomic selection at the F4 generation to predict disease resistance and other important traits to advance lines to yield trials. This project will lead to the utilization of resistant germplasm and genetic markers generated by ARS to release crown resistant oat varieties from the cooperator breeding program that are adapted to the Midwest.
