Research Project: Tracking Sources of Dickeya and Pectobacterium That Lead to Soft Rot and Blackleg Outbreaks

Location: Emerging Pests and Pathogens Research

Project Number: 8062-21000-048-018-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
1. Sequence whole genomes of soft rot bacteria isolated from diseased potato between 1918 – 1976 and current Dickeya outbreak strains. 2. Produce phylogenetic trees for soft rot bacteria epidemic and pandemic lineages currently affecting US potato production systems. 3. Determine when and where epidemic and pandemic bacterial lineages were introduced or originated in the US.

Approach:
The cooperator will provide samples of bacterial pathogens isolated from commercial potato plants in the North West United States.
