Research Project: Engineering Bacterial Biosensors to Detect Potato Pathogens

Location: Emerging Pests and Pathogens Research

Project Number: 8062-21000-048-019-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2024
End Date: Jun 30, 2025

Objective:
1. Engineer biosensor bacteria to detect potato pathogens. 2. Determine detection limit and specificity in vitro. 3. Test ability of biosensors to detect zebra chip and soft rot bacteria in potato hosts and insect vectors (for zebra chip).

Approach:
The cooperator will design and test biosensors to detect zebra chip pathogen DNA. The Cooperator will provide plant samples containing zebra chip pathogens and choose zebra chip pathogen DNA sequences that are useful for differentiating this pathogen from all other potato pathogens.
