Research Project: Whole Slide Imaging Analysis Using AI

Location: Zoonotic and Emerging Disease Research

Project Number: 3022-32000-027-019-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 15, 2024
End Date: Jul 15, 2025

Objective:
The objective of the project is to improve on and produce new artificial intelligence (AI) tools for analyzing viral pathology on whole slide images.

Approach:
ARS is working jointly on producing machine learning models for analyzing whole slide histopathology images. This project is utilizing slides and tissues generated from animal studies of high consequence pathogens at the IRF. Slides are selected from well characterized animal models and used to develop and refine machine learning algorithms. Meta data is used to help interpret results and refine tools. As part of this effort slides may be sent to NBAF for analysis using advanced transcriptomics. This level of interrogation has never been applied to animal models of high consequence pathogens. Initial studies will focus on Ebola animal models as these are the most well characterized but will incorporate other models as part of the refinement efforts.
