Location: Emerging Pests and Pathogens Research
Project Number: 8062-22000-023-020-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Jul 31, 2025
Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research project include:
1. Develop and release improved potato cultivars with resistance to multiple pathotypes of the golden nematode (Globodera rostochiensis),
2. Develop profiles of new resistant cultivars to aid grower acceptance, and
3. Provide disease-free tissue culture plantlets of resistant cultivars.
Approach:
1. Crosses of potato clones will be made to generate populations that are segregating for resistance to multiple pathotypes of the golden nematode and improved horticultural and marketing characteristics.
2. Potato clones will be evaluated for nematode resistance and selected for downstream evaluations.
3. Resistant potato clones will be subjected to an extensive evaluation scheme and selected for improved yield, desired marketing characteristics, and disease resistance. 4) Disease-free tissue culture stocks will be developed and distributed to commercial seed growers for final multiplication as necessary to meet grower demands.
