Research Project: Survivorship and Development of Spotted Lanternfly on Wild and Cultivated Vitis Species

Location: Innovative Fruit Production, Improvement, and Protection

Project Number: 8080-21000-032-055-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Oct 31, 2025

Objective:
The objectives for this work will be to: 1) evaluate survivorship of different spotted lanternfly (SLF) life stages on single host Vitis spp. over a two-week time period; and 2) evaluate development of newly hatched SLF nymphs to adulthood on single host Vitis spp.

Approach:
ARS will collect and store SLF egg masses as a source of newly hatched SLF; procure and plant Vitis spp. and tree of heaven in the greenhouse; conduct survivorship studies of SLF life ages on Vitis spp. for early instar nymphs and adults over a two-week period; hatch SLF from egg masses and introduce them into cages with host plants; and track survivorship and development to the adult stage.
