Research Project: Developing More Durable Wheat Rust Resistant Germplasm

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-025-034-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Jul 30, 2027

Objective:
1. Identify and characterize durable resistance to stem and leaf rust in wheat and barley, 2) incorporate combinations of rust resistance genes, specially for UG99 and related stem rust isolates, into adapted U.S. germplasm and release to the breeding programs, and 3)monitor, collect, and characterize Puccinia hordei populations in the U.S. for virulence to barley leaf rust resistance genes.

Approach:
Rust diseases of these cereals are among the most important causes of yield loss in these crops in the U.S. and worldwide. This research project will oversee the development of disease resistant wheat and barley germplasm that are directly used by the various breeding programs. Collection and monitoring of barley leaf rust pathogens from across the U.S. and critical hotspots across the world, to identify the genetic variation in populations will further guide the development of more resistant germplasm Ultimately the goal is to devise a more efficient system of deriving more resistant varieties for use by the research community.
