Research Project: Cattle Use Fees to Texas A&M AgriLife

Location: Livestock Nutrient Management Research

Project Number: 3090-31630-006-056-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 15, 2024
End Date: Aug 31, 2028

Objective:
This agreement aims to cover costs for collaborative research between Texas A&M AgriLife and ARS, which are being conducted in support of the Enteric Methane Monitoring work funded by USDA-NRCS through the Inflation Reduction Act (Interagency Reimbursable Agreement #3090-31630-006-055I). Texas A&M AgriLife will purchase and own cattle throughout the duration of each experiment (1 per year for 5 years) and will assist with data collection and care of the cattle.

Approach:
We have proposed 7 experimental trials to be conducted from FY24 through FY31. This NACA will cover activities from FY24 through FY29. The specific experiments may be subject to change as research over this period evolves and enteric methane mitigation options become available. In all experiments, we will use an automated head chamber system to measure methane and carbon dioxide emissions and oxygen consumption. In each experiment, 54 steers will be individually fed in their own feed bunks that only allow one animal to gain access at a time.
