Research Project: Impact of Agricultural Intensification on Microbial Processes Underpinning Soil Health in the Western Corn Belt

Location: Agroecosystem Management Research

Project Number: 3042-21600-001-010-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 20, 2024
End Date: Jul 19, 2028

Objective:
1) Collect baseline soil health and microbial community data (FAMEs) at the 0-15 and 15-30 cm soil depth from PRHPA LTAR NT rainfed and irrigated sites. 2) Additional samplings will be conducted at late vegetative and early crop reproduction in both maize and soybean to determine effects of BAU vs ASP management practices on soil microbial communities, AMF, N-cycling genes and potential N mineralization.

Approach:
Soil samples will be collected from georeferenced sampling points or plot composites and characterized for basic soil health measures, including soil microbial communities and functions using fatty acid, molecular and enzymatic methods. Specific field projects will also be used to address fundamental questions of soil management impacts on underlying microbial processes related to plant productivity, soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N) cycling, and soil health.
